Roughly 50 vehicles have been covered with what seems to be blood from a person in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.
Vehicles, building surfaces and postboxes were defaced, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they stated in a release.
Officers state they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a individual observed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a reddish liquid.
The fluid had been placed in the pattern of a swastika, they added.
Law enforcement then found numerous other vandalized automobiles and residential walls in the surrounding area.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Law enforcement report preliminary tests suggest the liquid was likely blood from a person.
"There is still no clue as to its origin; officials are not yet informed of any physical harm in connection with the event," they added.
Municipal representatives said they were trying "to unravel the incident" and have appealed to the public for information.
A high-ranking official commented the vandalism left him without words and had to be solved promptly.
"This incident affects the core of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the far-right attack five years ago," he posted on social media, referring to the killing of nine people by a gunman targeting residents of migrant background in 2020.
