Comeback Medvedev Wins Maiden Championship in Nearly 30 Months

Nineteen of Medvedev's twenty-one victories have been earned on hard surfaces

A comeback Medvedev secured his initial trophy for nearly 30 months with victory over Corentin Moutet in the Almaty Open final.

Medvedev, a former world number one, has experienced a difficult year, achieving just one match at the major tournaments and experiencing a setback at the New York tournament.

The player's unpredictability on the tennis tour - and issues with his serving in especial - resulted in him exiting of the top ten and ultimately separating with long-time coach Cervara.

Presently collaborating with his coach and Rohan Goetzke, Medvedev has consistently improved in the recent weeks - culminating in a tightly fought 7-5 4-6 6-3 victory over Frenchman Moutet.

This marks Medvedev's maiden championship since the Italian tournament and maiden on a hard court since March of the previous year.

The win also indicates the Russian has secured 21 titles at twenty-one various tournaments.

"For the first time I have attended a event with my children simultaneously, so to win a championship is particularly special," said ranked player Medvedev.

"This victory is in honour of my younger daughter my daughter, because the first title I achieved when my older daughter her name was born was for her."

The athlete, the past champion, had failed in his last six title deciders, featuring in that event earlier this year.

His retrieving play style and frequent outbursts on court had led commentators to wonder if his capacity to compete at the elite level was over.

But the player has made changes in the past month, striving to come to the net and perform positively, backed up by an improved serve.

Medvedev came back from a deficit in the opening set against the difficult Moutet, winning 4 of the last five games to go ahead.

Both players traded service breaks in the middle set before Moutet, striving for his first tour victory, seized the initiative to force a final set.

Moutet defended four initial opportunities in a close deciding set before Medvedev secured a break to that score to serve for the match.

Suitably, Medvedev secured the title with a point at the net, with Moutet failing to handle a shot after over two and a half hours.
