RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a several access tunnels providing entry to the facility... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - established jihadist rule over parts of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation shows our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS after its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of British forces involved in this strike for their skill and their valour," he added. "They were part of thousands of British troops stationed over the holidays. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."

During December, the American forces conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in the country, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
