As any significant awards ceremony nears, one notices a clamor to include fresh award types to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the spirits of followers who have specialized interests.
My colleague has already made for a horror game category. It would be amazing. So would tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case supporting my request remains most pressing and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Categorizing Game Types
Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and it will always generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why film award organizations avoid this approach. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of video games, which are so diverse they hardly constitute a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Present Award Structure
Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories successfully include numerous genres, making space possible for most games within them.
Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Think about these recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Which classification works between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.
- One classic puzzle game got overlooked completely during that awards season
- A different innovative game received no nominations during that ceremony
- Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Only a few brain-teasers barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often compact experiences, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games rank among the most-played games worldwide maintaining this status for many years.
The famous puzzle experience rivals well-known building titles for the title of most purchased experience; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and engaging across multiple categories.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. One could readily select five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
To emphasize again, these are games without proper classification at major gaming awards. Logic title developers are working at the hard edge of video game design, producing among most fundamental forms of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay decades.
