Users Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that people who stop using new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users buying these drugs must be aware of the danger of quick weight regain when the therapy concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a return to original weight in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually have a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Experts suggest the way of the injections is key to understanding the heightened regain.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Accounts

People who have come off the jabs report a intense return of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you become starving," described a patient.

This difficulty is worsened if patients have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Use

Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among females than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural support.
